Johannesburg, South Africa 1996, the day after Christmas, Kempton Park Hospital closes its doors to the public, citing a shortage of medical staff, promising it was not a permanent closure and it would reopen soon. Just weeks later the staff was informed of their terminations and told to evacuate the premises with all their personal property, they were not coming back. Then the government threw up a fence and security around the property and it has yet to be reopened or even explained. What happened to cause an entire hospital to be left to rot and deteriorate, while the community struggled to find medical treatment?
